Playing in the wind
Many of us grew up in areas where the
wind seldom blew harder than a gentle
breeze. Have you ever encountered stronger
winds, but had no idea how to handle the
conditions. Here are a few tips on playing
in windy conditions.
- The old adage "when it's breezy swing easy"
is valid. The harder you hit the ball the
more backspin you create thus creating more
lift on the ball. Try using more club, grip
down and swing easier for the same distance.
- Widen your stance. This gives you a better
base to swing the club. It also produces more
of a sweeping motion in the swing which makes
it easier to hit the ball lower.
- Use the wind to your advantage. When driving,
if there is a strong left to right wind do not
attempt to hit a draw. Aim more to the left and
let you ball ride the wind. Also there will be
certain situations when approaching a green into
the wind, that will be able to stop the ball
quicker.
Try using some of these techniques when
confronted with windy conditions. Remember to
practice on the range first so you are comfort-
able and familiar with the shot.
