Side-hill Lies
Golf is not always played off a flat lie,
like on a driving range. On the course
there are hills, valleys, mounds and slopes
even in the fairways. There are a few adj-
ustments you need to make to help compensate
for these circumstances.
When the ball is above your feet you need to:
1) Stand a little further from the ball.
2) Aim a little right because the hill causes
you to swing more around and tends to curve
the ball to the left.
3) Make sure you stay in balance.
4) Use less club because this lie tends to
close the face.
When the ball is below your feet you need to:
1) Stand closer to the ball.
2) Aim a little left. The hill causes you to
swing more upright and tends to curve the ball
to the right.
3) Be sure to stay in balance and in your posture.
Try not to stand up.
4) Use more club because the clubface tends to
open.
Most driving ranges do not have an area to
practice side-hill lies. Therefore, when you are
playing late in the afternoon on your home course,
drop a few balls and practice these shots. The
more you do it, the more comfortable and confident
you will feel playing golf.
