WALKING MAKES YOU SMARTER Tough project at work? Take a walk. A new study reports that aerobic exercise can
improve your mental fitness. Researchers at the University of Illinois split 124
subjects into two groups: One walked up to 45 minutes a day, three times a week, while the
other group stretched for an hour three times a week. After 6 months, the walkers scored
15 percent higher on tests that measured their ability to perform multiple mental tasks
and their ability to focus on those tasks. "Walking and other aerobic exercise may
improve bloodflow to the frontal lobes of the brain, the area that controls the ability to
coordinate, sort, and process information," says Arthur Kramer, Ph.D., the lead
study author. |
